Woofun AI reports that U.S. Senators Rubén Gallego and Cynthia Lummis have jointly introduced a bipartisan resolution urging Congress to formally oppose any form of federal clemency for FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. The legislation seeks to block presidential pardons, commutations, or other leniency measures, asserting that SBF has completed his judicial proceedings and should not pursue further relief. Gallego characterized the convicted executive as showing 'no remorse,' while Lummis emphasized that he must bear the established consequences rather than 'chasing a pardon he hasn't received.'
This legislative action follows SBF's recent filing of a clemency application with the U.S. Department of Justice. In 2023, a jury convicted SBF on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy related to the FTX collapse, resulting in a 25-year prison sentence and an order to forfeit approximately $11 billion in assets in 2024. With customer losses exceeding $8 billion, the case stands as one of the largest financial frauds in U.S. history. Although former President Trump has previously stated he has no intention of granting a pardon, lawmakers remain concerned about political uncertainty. Currently, prediction markets estimate the probability of SBF receiving a pardon remains in the low single digits.
