DeepMind Faces Talent Drain as Key Executives Join Anthropic
2026-06-25 09:34

Woofun AI reports that Google DeepMind is experiencing a significant exodus of senior AI researchers, with Gemini core contributor Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planning to join Anthropic. This follows the departure of AlphaFold team leader John Jumper to Anthropic and Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer to OpenAI. Senior research engineer Arthur Conmy is also moving to Anthropic to lead alignment work, while Canadian researcher Rishub Jain resigns to establish an AI safety nonprofit.

The departures are attributed to internal resource reallocations and external competitive pressures. Shazeer’s exit was directly linked to the diversion of computational resources from his team to DeepMind London. CEO Demis Hassabis acknowledged the intense talent competition at the Cannes Lions Festival. SignalFire analysis indicates DeepMind engineers are 11 times more likely to switch to Anthropic than vice versa. Anthropic, valued at $965 billion, is leveraging high compensation and autonomous research opportunities to attract talent, though UK non-compete agreements may delay some hires until 2026 or 2027.
