Austria Proposes EU Host Anthropic to Counter US AI Access Restrictions

Woofun AI reports that the Austrian government has urged the European Union to establish Anthropic within its borders as a strategic countermeasure to United States restrictions on foreign access to advanced artificial intelligence models. In an open letter addressed to the EU Commissioner for Technology, Austrian Secretary of State for Digitalization Alexander Proell advocated for joint exploration of Anthropic’s strategic presence in Europe, requesting specific provisions for legal protection, market access, and capital support.

Proell emphasized that Europe must avoid exclusion from major technological innovations and position itself as an architect of the technological future rather than a passive recipient. This proposal aligns with legislation introduced earlier this month by the European Commission, designed to strengthen local cloud computing, AI, and semiconductor sectors to reduce reliance on US technology giants. Anthropic has not yet issued a response to the proposal.
