Woofun AI reports that the South Korean government has unveiled extensive project plans for semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence data centers. President Lee Jae-myung emphasized the urgency of accelerating AI development and completing chip production facilities before infrastructure constraints, particularly water resources, become critical.
The initiative involves investing between 50 trillion and 200 trillion won in the southwestern region, with Gwangju and Jeolla contributing 52 trillion won. The plan includes constructing four new chip factories in the southwest, backed by approximately 800 trillion won in total investment. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are each scheduled to build two new facilities. Over the next 15 years, chip sector investment is projected to reach at least 300 trillion won, covering next-generation memory, edge AI, and defense applications.
Additionally, 81 trillion won is allocated for a chip packaging cluster in the Chungcheong region, while 55 trillion won will fund AI data center construction. The government aims to double DRAM production capacity within five years, anticipating a fourfold increase in the global memory market over the same period.
