Oman Proposes Strait of Hormuz Transit Fees, US Opposes Mandatory Charges
2026-06-30 21:30

Woofun AI reports that Oman has formally proposed to the United States and Western allies a plan to jointly collect passage fees from vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to fund waterway security and operational management. The proposal draws partial inspiration from the operational frameworks of the Strait of Malacca and the Singapore Strait.

Regional diplomats described the proposed fees as voluntary, whereas Iranian officials characterized them as mandatory. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States opposes any form of charging for passage through the strait, regardless of whether labeled as "fees, tolls, or donations," and advocated for restoring pre-war free navigation status. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced that Tehran will soon begin negotiations with Oman regarding the fee mechanism and route adjustments.
