Woofun AI reports that the South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT is coordinating with the presidential office to deploy approximately 5 trillion Korean won in semiconductor tax revenue. The funds will finance the purchase of around 10,000 NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPU modules this year to support a single elite team in developing a world-class sovereign AI model.
This strategic shift addresses vulnerabilities exposed by US export controls on advanced AI models, which forced local firms to modify systems based on Anthropic and OpenAI technologies. While current domestic efforts by LG AI Research Institute, SK Telecom, Upstage, and Motif Technologies are limited to 700-800 GPUs each, the government aims to concentrate resources to compete with global leaders. President Lee Jae-myung has urged rapid procurement to avoid becoming an 'AI satellite state,' citing France's success with Mistral AI as a benchmark for focused investment.
