Woofun AI reports that Micron has officially initiated construction of a semiconductor manufacturing expansion in Higashi-Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The project entails a total investment of approximately 1.5 trillion yen ($9.3 billion) dedicated to producing advanced storage solutions for artificial intelligence applications.
The new facility will prioritize the production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component for enhancing the performance of AI processors from companies such as Nvidia. Chip deliveries from this expanded capacity are scheduled to commence by the summer of 2028. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has committed up to 500 billion yen in subsidies to support the initiative, aiming to bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and supply chain resilience.
