Woofun AI reports that Micron commenced construction on a factory expansion in Higashi-Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The initiative involves an investment of approximately 1.5 trillion yen ($9.3 billion) to manufacture advanced memory chips for artificial intelligence applications.
The new production line will prioritize high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component for AI processors such as those developed by Nvidia. Initial shipments are projected for the summer of 2028. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has allocated up to 500 billion yen in subsidies to support the project and bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
