Woofun AI reports that Meta plans to commence production of its "Iris" AI chip in September as part of the internal Meta Training and Inference Accelerators (MTIA) project. The chip, designed in collaboration with Broadcom and manufactured by TSMC, targets enhanced AI capabilities for platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
The initiative aims to decrease dependence on external GPU suppliers such as Nvidia and AMD while reducing substantial computing costs. Following the chip's launch, Meta intends to deploy a 7-gigawatt computing infrastructure in 2026, expanding to 14 GW in 2027, with capital expenditures projected to reach $145 billion this year.
