Woofun AI data shows that cryptocurrency projects incurred approximately $972 million in losses from 207 hacking incidents during the first half of 2026. Although the frequency of attacks reached a historic high, the aggregate financial impact stayed below $1 billion, representing less than half of the losses recorded in the first half of 2025.

Immunefi attributes the reduction in DeFi sector losses to enhanced security measures, including bug bounty programs and audit competitions. The report indicates that DeFi losses fell by 74% from the 2022 peak of $2.62 billion to roughly $680.3 million, with the median single loss decreasing by 75%. Risk sources are shifting from smart contract vulnerabilities to infrastructure failures, private key leaks, cross-chain configuration errors, and privileged access weaknesses.
