Woofun AI data shows that the rapid expansion of AI data centers in the United States has significantly increased public electricity costs. The PJM Market Monitoring Unit, overseeing grids in 14 Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states, projects an additional $23 billion burden on electricity users lasting until at least the end of 2028.
Although major technology firms have committed to covering infrastructure expenses, regulatory frameworks often distribute costs for transmission lines, substations, and grid upgrades uniformly. Consequently, a portion of these expenses may be transferred to residential and commercial consumers. While some facilities mitigate peak-hour strain through flexible load adjustments, their actual costs remain lower than the grid stress they generate, highlighting ongoing regulatory challenges regarding cost allocation and pricing mechanisms.
