Woofun AI reports that New York Governor Hochul has signed an executive order immediately suspending construction of new hyperscale data centers with power capacities of 50 megawatts or more. This regulatory pause addresses concerns regarding the financial burden on public electricity users.
The PJM Market Monitoring Unit estimates that additional demand from data centers will impose approximately $23 billion in extra costs on electricity consumers, a trend expected to persist until at least the end of 2028. Although major technology firms have pledged to cover infrastructure expenses, regulatory frameworks often distribute costs for transmission lines and grid upgrades across all users, potentially shifting expenses to residents and commercial entities. While flexible load adjustments can mitigate peak-period usage, data centers continue to consume significant power, resulting in actual costs that may remain lower than the strain placed on the grid.
