Woofun AI reports that Samsung Electronics is considering outsourcing the backend design of Google's 10th-gen TPU I/O chip due to resource constraints. The chip, codenamed Icefish, uses a 2nm process for data transfer between the Compute processor and HBM, while the Compute processor uses TSMC's 1.4nm node. Mass production is expected by 2028.
Samsung faces a manpower shortage after securing 2nm orders from Google, Tesla, Anthropic, and DeepX. Potential outsourcing partners include ADTechnology, Gaonchips, and Alphachips. ADTechnology and Gaonchips are focused on other large-scale projects and show limited enthusiasm for low-value-added backend design contracts. Alphachips, however, views the project as a growth driver. Industry insiders note that overflow orders from TSMC's constrained 2nm capacity contribute to Samsung's resource crunch.
