Ethereum Node Centralization Risks Rise as US Hosts 31% of Infrastructure

Woofun AI data shows that approximately 31% of Ethereum node activity is located in the United States, with about 39% distributed across the EU region excluding the UK. Research leader Alexander Neumuller stated that this distribution relies heavily on a limited number of cloud service providers, including Hetzner, Amazon AWS, and OVH, rather than being spread evenly across individual countries.

The analysis warns that if more than one-third of validators go offline simultaneously, the network may fail to finalize block checkpoints. Neumuller noted that the lack of a one-to-one correspondence between nodes and validators makes it difficult to assess the specific impact of any single provider's failure.

Additionally, the report highlights client software concentration as a potential vulnerability and confirms that Ethereum's annual energy consumption has dropped by approximately 99.98% to 7.9 GWh since the Merge, with over 56% of power coming from sustainable sources.
