AMD MI500 CPO Roadmap Reveal Could Shift Optical Interconnect Market Dynamics

Woofun AI reports that AMD will host the Advancing AI event in San Francisco on July 22nd to 23rd, expected to detail the MI500 series GPU and scale-up Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) roadmap. Analyst Serenity indicates that an explicit commitment to CPO and disclosure of the optical engine supplier would signal a broader industry shift toward optical interconnects, moving beyond NVIDIA’s exclusive dominance.

Current supply chain speculation links AMD with Astera Labs for Universal Active Links (UAL) and Broadcom for ESUN, while Gridcore is rumored to be involved in MI500 CPO work with Sivers as a laser supplier. AMD’s prior investment in Ayar Labs also positions Sivers as a potential beneficiary if either Ayar Labs or Gridcore SCALE is confirmed as the optical engine solution. The MI500 is anticipated to utilize a native UAL architecture supporting 256 GPUs per rack via optical links, validating Sivers’ strategic layout across CPO, pluggable modules, and silicon photonics.
