South Korean CFD Open Interest Surges 67% to $22B

Woofun AI data shows that South Korean Contract for Difference (CFD) open interest reached approximately 33 trillion Korean won ($22 billion) as of July 21, representing a nearly 67% increase year-over-year. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics emerged as the primary targets, with SK Hynix positions surging 2500% to 2350 billion won and Samsung Electronics expanding fivefold to 2170 billion won.

Analysts warn that CFDs require only 40% margin for full exposure without actual stock ownership, creating systemic risks. The Korea Capital Market Institute noted that concentrated leveraged positions could trigger forced liquidations if margin requirements are unmet, potentially amplifying volatility similar to the 2023 retail investor blow-up event.
