India Orders GitHub to Remove Bitchat Repositories Within 3 Hours
2026-07-24 18:17

Woofun AI reports that the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center issued an order to GitHub under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, demanding the removal of three Bitchat code repositories within three hours. The notice claims the app's anonymous, serverless architecture hinders law enforcement efforts to intercept communications. Bitchat, released by Jack Dorsey in July 2025, facilitates encrypted messaging and Bitcoin transaction forwarding via Bluetooth mesh networks without internet access. The removal request followed student protests in Delhi where users employed the tool to bypass internet shutdowns. As of the report, it remains unclear if GitHub complied, though the app stays available on major app stores.
