Woofun AI reports that Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has initiated a strategic partnership with Meridian to deploy a stablecoin-based settlement rail for cross-border payments. This infrastructure is specifically designed to streamline inbound transactions for freelancers and virtual assistants who receive overseas income, aiming to optimize the financial flow for these remote workers.
The operational model utilizes stablecoins as an intermediate settlement instrument before funds are converted into Philippine pesos and credited to recipients’ BPI accounts.
Woofun AI data shows this digitalization strategy, championed by BPI President and CEO Jose Teodoro Limcaoco, seeks to replicate traditional banking safeguards while significantly reducing processing times and costs. The system is designed to enhance the efficiency of overseas earnings distribution.
Structurally, the pilot will initially concentrate on payroll and other forms of overseas earnings, with a broader rollout scheduled ahead of the 49th ASEAN Summit in November. BPI intends to coordinate closely with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, ensuring that any expansion adheres to strict regulatory frameworks regarding consumer protection and stablecoin reserve transparency.
This approach balances the need for rapid, low-cost transactions with the security standards inherent in traditional banking systems. By integrating stablecoin technology, BPI aims to deliver a more efficient payment solution without compromising the integrity of financial safeguards.
