The core issue lies not in a manufacturing defect but in the fundamental chemical composition required to achieve biodegradability, which inherently sacrifices long-term structural stability for environmental decomposition.
The primary materials driving this phenomenon are polylactic acid, known as PLA, and polybutylene terephthalate co-polyester, referred to as PBAT. These two compounds form the backbone of most biodegradable bags found in major retail chains such as Hema and BHG supermarkets. PLA is frequently utilized in rigid applications like eco-friendly straws and lunch boxes due to its hardness, yet it is too brittle to form the thin, flexible films necessary for shopping bags on its own. To mitigate this rigidity, manufacturers blend PLA with PBAT, a polymer that offers superior ductility and flexibility, allowing the final product to mimic the handling characteristics of traditional plastic.
However, this specific chemical mixture introduces a critical vulnerability: both PLA and PBAT molecules contain numerous ester bonds that are chemically unstable compared to the carbon-carbon saturated bonds found in conventional plastics.
The presence of these ester bonds creates a direct trade-off between the bag's ability to degrade and its capacity to remain intact during storage. Under normal environmental conditions, these bonds react with water molecules in a process called hydrolysis, which causes the molecular chains to break down and significantly reduces the tensile strength of the material. PBAT, which provides the necessary flexibility, degrades at a faster rate than PLA, meaning that bags with higher PBAT content will become brittle and prone to tearing more quickly. This chemical reality explains why a bag that appears robust when brand new can disintegrate into fragments after being stored for only a few months, directly contradicting the 'encouraging multiple uses' labeling often found on the packaging.
Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity act as accelerants for this degradation process, further shortening the usable lifespan of the bags. High heat and moisture levels intensify the hydrolysis reaction, causing the material to lose all structural integrity within a timeframe of just a few months. In contrast, traditional plastic bags made from polyethylene possess molecular chains composed entirely of stable carbon-carbon saturated bonds that do not undergo significant chemical changes over time. This chemical stability allows polyethylene bags, such as those still used by Sam's Club, to be stored for many years without deterioration, although this same property renders them persistent environmental pollutants that resist natural decomposition.
To maximize the limited shelf life of biodegradable bags, strict storage protocols must be followed, yet these conditions are difficult to maintain in typical household environments. The optimal storage temperature should be maintained around 25°C, with relative humidity kept below 50% to slow the hydrolysis reaction.
Additionally, the bags must be protected from light exposure to prevent damage from ultraviolet rays, which can further degrade the polymer chains. Even when these ideal conditions are met, the shelf life of biodegradable bags rarely exceeds six to twelve months. Consequently, purchasing these bags in bulk for long-term hoarding is a flawed strategy that will almost certainly result in the material breaking prematurely before it can be utilized.
The disposal pathway for these bags presents another layer of complexity, as they do not degrade easily in ordinary soil or water environments despite their 'biodegradable' label. For complete decomposition to occur, the bags must be sent to industrial composting facilities where specific microbial activity and environmental conditions can break down the PLA and PBAT compounds. In a humid environment containing microorganisms, the bags are actually more likely to break apart prematurely, which complicates the logistics of transporting them to a facility. Therefore, the most effective usage model involves using the bags immediately for kitchen waste collection and ensuring they are processed through industrial composting rather than being stored or discarded casually in landfills.
Despite the theoretical benefits of reducing plastic waste, the practical reality is that many of these biodegradable bags still end up in landfills or natural environments where they cannot decompose properly. The fragility of the material, combined with the specific requirements for industrial composting, means that the environmental advantage is often negated by improper disposal or premature failure. Given these limitations, the most reliable approach for consumers remains bringing their own durable, reusable eco-friendly bags to supermarkets, thereby bypassing the cycle of purchasing fragile, short-lived biodegradable alternatives that may ultimately contribute to the very waste problem they aim to solve.
