The valuation frenzy surrounding private artificial intelligence entities is undergoing a structural transformation as retail investors gain access to previously restricted pre-IPO markets through cryptocurrency infrastructure. Historically, equities in unlisted giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX were confined to institutional funds, brokerages, and high-net-worth individuals.
However, platforms such as Ventuals and PreStocks have introduced mechanisms allowing the public to trade valuation expectations 24/7 with leverage.
This shift marks a critical evolution where crypto architecture, once dedicated to digital token speculation, is now repurposed to facilitate real-time betting on the world's most valuable private technology companies.
Market data indicates a significant divergence between traditional funding rounds and on-chain speculative valuations. Traders on these platforms have driven Anthropic's implied valuation to 1.6 trillion USD, a figure that doubles the valuation established in the company's recent private funding rounds. Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that this surge reflects speculative positioning rather than actual equity transfers, highlighting a disconnect between on-chain price discovery and fundamental asset backing. The trading volume on these specialized platforms has surged in recent weeks, with Ventuals accumulating approximately 500 million USD since its November launch and PreStocks surpassing 630 million USD since its inception in September.
The operational models of these platforms differ fundamentally in their approach to asset representation. Ventuals, backed by investment firm Paradigm, utilizes perpetual futures contracts that possess no underlying assets, no expiration dates, and no peg to real stock trading. Conversely, PreStocks employs a structure where tokens are minted on a one-to-one basis based on Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) exposure, aiming to track real stocks in the secondary market. While PreStocks founder Xavier Ekkel asserts that these SPVs originate from a network of traditional funds and brokers to introduce real-time price discovery, the legal validity of such structures remains contentious.
Legal risks remain a paramount concern for participants in this emerging market. Anthropic has explicitly stated that SPV structures claiming to represent equity may lack legal value and considers them void. Consequently, retail investors are not acquiring shareholder rights but are instead engaging in transactions regarding the valuation expectations of these AI giants. Woofun AI notes that this distinction creates a scenario where price exposure is decoupled from actual ownership, exposing traders to significant regulatory and counterparty risks. The platforms facilitate long and short positions on assets that were previously inaccessible, effectively financializing the private placement market for a broader audience.
Despite the speculative nature of these instruments, some market participants argue that on-chain derivatives may track genuine institutional demand. Jesse Leimgruber, co-founder of AI hardware manufacturer OpenHome, indicated that he utilizes Ventuals to gauge the worth of his Anthropic holdings. In April, he received an offer for his shares through a traditional secondary market channel at a price roughly consistent with the implied valuation on Ventuals. This alignment suggests that the on-chain derivative market may be reflecting real-world liquidity dynamics rather than operating solely as a venue for speculative noise.
Market sentiment appears to be shifting between key competitors, with Anthropic currently commanding double the tokenized interest of OpenAI on these platforms. This trend mirrors broader secondary market dynamics where investor focus is pivoting toward Anthropic while OpenAI faces relative disfavor. Woofun AI analysis suggests that as valuations for both companies approached 1 trillion USD, some traders opted to short positions citing a cooling narrative, despite recent reports of Google investing 100 billion USD in Anthropic at a 3.5 trillion USD valuation.
The emergence of these products represents the latest frontier in the tokenization of real-world assets, following earlier experiments with sovereign wealth funds and private credit tools. Prior attempts to tokenize stakes in these companies have faced resistance, notably when OpenAI distanced itself from a stock token linked to Robinhood Markets Inc., causing a drop in Robinhood's stock price. As the cryptocurrency ecosystem matures, the permissionless architecture driving meme coin speculation is increasingly being leveraged to create complex financial instruments for private tech valuations, fundamentally altering how retail capital interacts with the AI sector.
