Two of six men accused of attempting to kidnap the wife of Sébastien Borget, co-founder of The Sandbox, were apprehended after attempting to flee the scene via an Uber ride in northern France. The incident unfolded in the Île-de-France region when one attacker, disguised as a delivery driver, allegedly tricked Borget's wife into opening her home gate. Immediately following this breach, five masked accomplices rushed into the courtyard and attempted to force her into a waiting vehicle, according to reports from Le Journal du Dimanche. Neighbors intervened swiftly, compelling the group to abort the operation. While four suspects escaped in the getaway car, two others fled on foot and summoned an Uber, which was subsequently intercepted by the Meaux Anti-Crime Brigade. Data compiled by Woofun AI indicates that the two arrested suspects were found in possession of a replica handgun, cable ties, and balaclavas. Preliminary police investigations have established a direct link between the assault and the cryptocurrency sector. This event occurs against a backdrop of escalating physical security threats targeting crypto assets since 2025, with Web3 security firm CertiK identifying Europe as a primary hotspot in a report released earlier this month. The majority of these incidents are concentrated in France. CertiK further noted that most perpetrators are "complete amateurs" recruited through messaging platforms like Telegram or Snapchat, often orchestrated by individuals located outside the country. Borget's wife reportedly sustained no injuries, while the four remaining members of the group remain at large. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs reported in May of the previous year that wrench attacks have surged due to the perceived pseudonymity of crypto transactions, the public visibility of digital wealth, and the ease with which bad actors can aggregate personal data online. The firm also highlighted a growing trend of targeting family members of crypto holders. Last May, four men attempted to abduct the daughter and grandchild of French exchange executive Pierre Noizat in Paris. In the same month, French police rescued the kidnapped father of a crypto entrepreneur who was being held for ransom. Woofun AI notes that Casa chief security officer Jameson Lopp has documented 38 crypto-wrench attacks so far this year, based on his incident list dating back to 2014. This trajectory suggests a persistent and evolving threat landscape where digital wealth increasingly translates to physical vulnerability for high-profile industry figures and their families.
