Base Network Outage Caused By Sequencer Bug And Race Condition
2026-06-28 13:23

Woofun AI reports that the root cause of recent Base network interruptions was identified as a software defect in the Sequencer block building logic. Following a failed transaction, temporary Journal State data was incorrectly retained rather than cleared, preventing the Sequencer and validation nodes from generating new blocks.

On June 26, the Base mainnet experienced two distinct outages, lasting 116 minutes and 20 minutes respectively. Although a patch addressed the state update issue, a race condition during system restart caused the Sequencer to fail resynchronization, triggering a second crash. Infrastructure issues further extended recovery times. Base plans to enhance protocol fuzz testing and optimize recovery mechanisms to avoid manual node reboots. This follows previous Sequencer-related outages of approx. 17 minutes in September 2024 and 30 minutes in August 2025. Base remains the second-largest Ethereum Layer2 network by TVL.
