Woofun AI reports that reverse engineering by developer Lao Ye indicates the new Codex version identifies model service providers, disabling tools like lifelike images and online search after third-party API integration. While the underlying model remains unchanged, client capabilities are restricted. Testing shows specifying the Provider name as OpenAI restores some functionality but enables remote conversation compression, potentially causing timeouts via `/responses/compact` calls. Alternatively, maintaining a custom Provider with the `x-openai-actor-authorization` header can re-enable web search and image tools. Although Codex CLI and app-server are open-sourced, the desktop client remains closed source, and OpenAI has not responded to these findings.
