Woofun AI reports that Alex Turner, an AI security researcher at Google DeepMind, has resigned. He cited the absence of prohibitions on mass surveillance and autonomous weapons without human control in a contract allowing the U.S. military to use AI for classified missions.
Turner had previously organized over 250 employees to sign a joint letter and submitted a 25-page alternative proposal to CEO Demis Hassabis, advocating for human oversight and independent review mechanisms. After the proposal was rejected, he resigned in June. Google maintains it opposes AI use for autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance lacking appropriate human oversight, but Turner noted these commitments are not binding, as clauses prohibiting such development were removed from Google's AI principles in 2025.
