Lido Upgrade Integrates 8M ETH, Reducing Validators by One Third
Lido's major protocol upgrade consolidates 8M ETH into fewer validators, cutting network load and attestation messages by ~29% while introducing collateral requirements for node operators.
Woofun AI reports that Lido has initiated its most significant protocol upgrade since 2023, integrating over 8 million staked ETH into a new validator architecture aligned with the Ethereum Pectra upgrade. This migration is projected to reduce the total number of Ethereum network validators by approximately one-third, thereby decreasing the consensus layer load. The update transitions professional node operators to the Curated Module v2 (CMv2) framework, which mandates ETH collateral locks for the first time to ensure operational performance, moving beyond reliance on reputation alone.
All 34 selected node operators are expected to complete the migration without exits due to the new collateral rules. Lido's staking lead Isidoros Passadis noted that this consolidation streamlines the validator set while enhancing security through capital constraints. The protocol anticipates a negligible 0.28% decrease in annual staking yield, with any yield impact confined to the brief transition period before balances transfer to new validators.
