Amazon Phases Out Nova Models, Shifts AI Focus to New Frontier Project

Amazon discontinues most Nova AI models, shifting resources to a new frontier project led by Pieter Abbeel. The move follows AGI lab closures and executive departures.

Woofun AI reports that Amazon is restructuring its artificial intelligence strategy by retiring the majority of its self-developed Nova models, including the Premier, Omni, Reel, and Canvas variants. These products will enter a maintenance-only phase while development resources are redirected to a new frontier model initiative spearheaded by Pieter Abbeel, who joined via the Covariant acquisition. The successor model is scheduled for debut at the re:Invent conference this fall.

This strategic pivot coincides with significant organizational changes, including the closure of the AGI Lab and recent layoffs within the AGI department. Key leadership shifts include the departure of AGI head Rohit Prasad in December 2025 and AGI Lab head David Luan earlier this year. The AGI unit was previously merged under Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis alongside chip and quantum computing divisions. An Amazon spokesperson stated that AI models remain a core priority, with the product lineup evolving to meet customer demands.
