Ethereum L2 TVL Drops to $5B, Hitting Two-Year Low Amid Ecosystem Cooling
Layer 2 total value locked falls to $5 billion, the lowest since 2023. Optimism, zkSync, and Arbitrum hold 96% of capital as traditional finance explores multi-chain alternatives.
Woofun AI data shows that Ethereum Layer 2 total value locked has declined to approximately $5 billion, marking the lowest level since 2023 and reversing capital gains from 2024. Optimism, zkSync, and Arbitrum collectively account for $4.8 billion, representing 96% of the sector's total value.
The contraction aligns with broader Ethereum challenges, including executive departures from the Ethereum Foundation. Traditional institutions are diversifying infrastructure; DTCC is pursuing multi-chain government bond tokenization, while JPMorgan Chase has extended JPM Coin to various public blockchains. Despite this shift, USDC and USDT settlements remain concentrated on Ethereum and its L2s, maintaining its role as a primary gateway for traditional finance.
