KOSPI Index Drops 44% in 40 Days, $2T Market Cap Vanishes
South Korea's KOSPI index fell 44% from June highs, erasing $2 trillion in market value. Samsung and SK hynix dominate the decline as AI chip trades unwind.
Woofun AI data shows that the South Korean KOSPI index has retraced approximately 39% from its historic high of 9385.59 on June 19th, with a maximum decline nearing 44% based on recent intraday lows. The total market capitalization of the KOSPI has shrunk by nearly $2 trillion, a figure roughly 1.55 times the total market cap of Bitcoin.
The decline is primarily driven by semiconductor-heavyweights Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, which together account for over 50% of the KOSPI's market cap. As global tech volatility intensifies, investors are reassessing AI capital expenditure returns and competition risks, leading to a rapid reversal in the South Korean semiconductor chain.
