GPU Rental Prices Could Increase Over 10-Fold in Coming Years
Analyst Dwarkesh Patel predicts GPU rental costs may rise tenfold as AI model efficiency increases, with H100 annual rates potentially exceeding $250,000.
Woofun AI notes that prominent AI podcast host Dwarkesh Patel predicts GPU compute rental prices could increase by over ten times in the coming years. He argues that as models become smarter, the value of work performed by a single GPU rises, prompting AI companies to pay premiums for compute power.
Patel cites software engineering as an example, suggesting that if H100-equivalent compute matches human engineer output, annual rental costs could exceed $250,000, roughly 15 times current spot prices. H100 one-year rental rates have already risen from $1.70 per hour in October 2025 to $2.35 per hour in March 2026, a nearly 40% increase. Epoch AI estimates global AI compute will triple by 2025, while demand from leading labs grows faster. This trend may eliminate price advantages for weaker models and phase out low-value image and short video generation, though an influx of AI programmers could lower engineering costs and challenge these projections.
