Lightning Labs Launches L402 Proxy Payment Website for Bitcoin AI Agents

Lightning Labs unveils L402 website enabling account-free Bitcoin payments and identity verification for AI agents via the Lightning Network.

Woofun AI reports that Lightning Labs launched a dedicated website for the L402 protocol, positioning it as a payment channel for AI agents using Bitcoin. The platform allows agents to execute transactions and verify identity natively without accounts, intermediaries, or human oversight, facilitating machine-to-machine commerce on Lightning. The release clarifies that this is a website implementation rather than the protocol itself, which already exists within Lightning Labs' tech stack. The standard implementation, Aperture, is currently utilized by the non-custodial exchange service Lightning Loop. The mechanism reuses the HTTP 402 status code, returning validation headers with tokens and Lightning invoices for restricted interface requests. Upon payment, clients access the interface with the token and payment original, enabling server-side verification without querying the payment database.
