Every 6.4 minutes, at the close of an epoch, the system will automatically deduct and destroy a linearly increasing portion of each validator’s newly minted compensation.
Under this framework, the fundamental compensation structure for validators remains largely intact regarding market-derived income. Validators will continue to receive all transaction fees and tips generated from building blocks, ensuring that their operational revenue from user activity is preserved. The only component subject to destruction is the newly created ETH issued by the consensus layer as a block reward. This distinction ensures that while the inflationary aspect of validator income is eliminated at saturation, the market-driven incentives for securing the network through fee collection remain fully operational and unchanged for participants.
The primary economic rationale behind the proposal addresses the issue of perpetual yield, which currently incentivizes continuous staking regardless of network security needs. Jérôme de Tychey, one of the proposal’s authors, highlights that even if every ETH were staked, the yield would still sit near 1.5%, creating a persistent incentive to add more stake. De Tychey projects that without intervention, more than 70 million ETH will be staked by January 2028. The authors argue that beyond a certain level, additional stake does not enhance security but instead concentrates power, as the ETH ends up held by large entities rather than individual owners, thereby squeezing out small participants.

The proposal has triggered sharp criticism from key players in the decentralized finance sector, particularly regarding its impact on borrowing strategies. Aave Labs chief executive Stani Kulechov stated in a blog post that moving staking rewards toward zero would render ETH borrowing strategies mostly unviable. Much of the ETH borrowed on Aave is used to buy more staked ETH, a trade that only works while staking yields exceed loan costs. Kulechov’s comments underscore the fragility of leveraged yield strategies that depend on consistent inflationary rewards, suggesting that the proposal could disrupt a significant portion of DeFi’s capital efficiency models.
Mike Silagadze, founder of liquid staking protocol ether.fi, objected to both the process and the substance of the proposal, highlighting procedural and centralization risks. He noted that the EIP was released with only 48 hours notice for comments, calling it a major network economics change with far-reaching implications for all of DeFi. Silagadze argued that the change would self-evidently push out solo stakers who aren’t subsidized by the EF or others, leaving staking to large centralized entities with zero cost of capital. He warned that seven of the top 10 DeFi protocols would face a capital exodus, as the reduced yields would make their current business models unsustainable.
The likelihood of this proposal being included in the Hegotá upgrade remains highly uncertain, given the tight timeline and lack of consensus. The upgrade is planned for the second half of 2026, with the inclusion deadline set for Aug. 6. The proposal arrives just days before this cutoff, accompanied by only a roughly 300-line draft implementation and no agreement among validators and stakers. The authors note that every month of delay lets the staking ratio climb by about another 1.5 percentage points, increasing the urgency but also the complexity of reaching a resolution before the fork. This marks a critical juncture where technical execution must align with economic consensus to avoid further fragmentation.
