Woofun AI reports that a proof of concept (PoC) for Japanese government bond repo transactions on the Canton Network has been initiated by four MUFG affiliates. The consortium includes MUFG, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking, and MUFG Bank, collaborating with Digital Asset Holdings and Progmat as announced on Thursday.
The primary objective is to enhance operational efficiency through the automation of the transaction lifecycle, enabling real-time intraday settlement 24/7 while improving funding and capital efficiency. This effort aligns with the Payment Innovation Project pilot launched by Japan's Financial Services Agency in February 2026, which supports fintech firms in testing advanced payment technologies including blockchain-based solutions, stablecoins, tokenization, and onchain settlement. Per Woofun AI, the regulatory framework specifically targets these innovations to modernize financial infrastructure.
This move represents a distinct evolution from MUFG's earlier blockchain strategies. In June 2023, the financial services firm announced that its stablecoin issuance platform, "Progmat Coin", would facilitate the launch of Japanese yen-pegged stablecoins on public blockchains. Previously, MUFG had terminated its GO-Net Japan blockchain payments project in February 2022 to concentrate resources on these stablecoin initiatives.
The transition from public blockchain experiments to a permissioned network for institutional repos signals a maturation in enterprise adoption. By leveraging the Canton Network for JGB repos, MUFG demonstrates a pragmatic approach to integrating distributed ledger technology into core banking operations. This marks a significant pivot toward regulated, high-value asset tokenization.
