The conviction stems from a scheme where Zhao deceived victim Zhang, who he met on a social platform, by fabricating a virtual currency "airdrop project."

In August 2025, Zhao persuaded Zhang to convert $1,757 into Ethereum and transfer the funds, promising substantial returns within two days. The assets were instead sent to a personal wallet registered under Zhao's girlfriend. After Zhang reported the incident in September 2025, the Pingba District Procuratorate filed charges on April 2 of this year, leading to the judgment issued on April 15.
