Gates Discusses Nuclear-AI Power Cooperation With SK And HD Hyundai Executives

Bill Gates meets SK and HD Hyundai leaders to align nuclear SMR development with surging AI data center electricity demands, building on prior $250M investments.

Woofun AI reports that Bill Gates held meetings on August 14 with SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won and HD Hyundai Group chairman Chung Ki-sun. The discussions centered on small modular reactor cooperation and addressing electricity demands driven by AI data centers. Gates and Chey Tae-won examined next-generation nuclear industry directions and US-South Korea collaboration potential. SK and SK Innovation previously invested $250 million in TerraPower in 2022, becoming its second-largest shareholders. On the same day, SK Innovation signed a business cooperation agreement with TerraPower regarding sodium-cooled small modular reactors. Gates also met with Chung Ki-sun and HD Hyundai E&C CEO Lee Han-woo to review progress on existing agreements. In May of this year, the three companies agreed to advance sodium-cooled reactor commercialization with defined responsibilities.
