Coldcard Hackers Fail to Launder 1,159 BTC via Mixers

Woofun AI reports that the Coldcard exploit has triggered a visible laundering effort, with stolen Bitcoin moving through mixing services in a manner that remains fully traceable on the public ledger. This transparency contrasts sharply with typical obfuscation tactics, as observed on-chain.

The majority of the stolen assets, totaling 1,159 BTC, remain effectively frozen in monitored wallets and have not been converted into cash.

However, a distinct subset of funds is being actively manipulated; one hacker controlling approximately 64 BTC has initiated specific laundering activities to obscure the origin of these assets.

Woofun AI data shows that the laundering strategy involves splitting the 64 BTC into distinct transaction patterns: 10 BTC was routed through a mixing protocol first, while the remaining 54 BTC was divided into 7 BTC chunks. These smaller increments are currently undergoing additional mixing steps, leveraging the unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) structure of Bitcoin to complicate direct tracing.

Despite these efforts, the public nature of the ledger allows blockchain analytics firms and law enforcement to apply heuristic analysis to link inputs and outputs. The recognizable pattern created by the 7 BTC chunks flags the activity for monitoring tools, underscoring the limitations of mixers against sophisticated anti-money laundering (AML) regulations and real-time surveillance.

This incident demonstrates that on-chain transparency remains a critical deterrent against crypto crime, as the Coldcard hackers’ attempt to evade detection has failed.
