BIP Editor Ousted After Failed Fork Attempt Stalls at 2.6% Support

Woofun AI reports that Luke Dashjr was stripped of his BIP editor status for the Bitcoin network immediately after the controversial BIP-110 soft-fork attempt collapsed. The removal motion gained traction shortly after the initiative, which sought to temporarily ban non-financial data usage, failed to secure necessary signaling from miners and node operators.

The core of the dispute centers on allegations of procedural misconduct by Dashjr, specifically regarding the premature assignment of a BIP number and a repository merge executed without due process. Mark Erhardt highlighted these violations in an Aug. 9 motion, noting that Dashjr's engagement with the BIP Editors had plummeted since April 2024. Per Woofun AI, the data shows Dashjr contributed less than 1% of editor comments in the repository during this period, with the disputed merge being his first action since May 2024.

Dashjr characterized the removal as "an abuse of power" on X, rejecting the earlier accusations as false. He announced a sabbatical from his roles as chair and chief technology officer of mining pool Ocean to refocus on Bitcoin and open-source projects. The failed BIP-110 aimed to create a breakaway chain excluding non-financial data like images and text, a practice popularized by the Ordinals protocol in 2023.

The proposal garnered support from only 2.6% of miners, falling drastically short of the 55% threshold required for activation. Consequently, the breakaway Bitcoin chain ceased operations after mining just two blocks, while the principal Bitcoin network continued its standard operations unaffected.
