Google Disbands AlphaFold Team, Shifting Focus to Gemini and Science Agents
DeepMind dissolves the Nobel-winning AlphaFold unit, reallocating staff to Gemini and general scientific automation. Key members depart for Anthropic, signaling a strategic pivot from specialized models to broad AI assistants.
Woofun AI reports that Google DeepMind has disbanded the original AlphaFold team, with most authors reassigned to projects including Gemini, enzyme design, nuclear fusion, and genomics over the past year. Close to a quarter of the full-time authors have departed the company. While AlphaFold’s protein structure prediction capabilities secured the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Demis Hassabis and John Jumper, DeepMind is pivoting from single-problem focus to building general-purpose scientific assistants via Gemini. John Jumper announced his move to Anthropic in June, joined by core members Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel. Isomorphic Labs continues to utilize AlphaFold achievements for drug discovery.
