Situational Awareness Fund Seeks Capital After AI Sector Drawdown
Leopold Aschenbrenner's fund seeks new capital and offers asset sales to LPs following severe July losses in AI stocks, amid leverage pressure.
Woofun AI reports that the Situational Awareness fund, managed by Leopold Aschenbrenner, is engaging with investors and lenders to secure additional capital. The fund, which posted a 439% gain prior to June 2026, suffered significant losses during the July AI sector sell-off. Aschenbrenner plans to open a new capital window on August 1st and is offering limited partners the chance to purchase portfolio assets. Disclosures indicate substantial declines in holdings such as Oracle and AMD, which fell approximately 20% in July, while other positions like Nebius and Saronic AI experienced larger drops. The fund had utilized leverage through prime brokers to amplify AI exposure, intensifying funding pressure during market downturns. In a July 24 letter, Aschenbrenner acknowledged the failure to avoid the shock but characterized the sell-off as a potential buying opportunity, citing Anthropic's potential IPO as a future catalyst.
