He described himself as not being a top student, particularly in English, having passed exams only three times during high school and facing comments from teachers that he seemed 'a bit slower than others.' Despite this, he dedicated his free time to construction, building a wind-powered car from recycled cardboard at age 10 and a miniature engine from scrap metal at 15.
Admitted to Zhejiang Sci-Tech University in 2009 to study mechanical engineering, he felt inferior due to the institution's ordinary status but found his niche in microcontrollers. That winter, he purchased an Arduino board for a few dozen yuan and, during the break, bought a dozen 9-gram servos to build a bipedal robot. Lacking proper equipment, he used hand drills and files, manually polishing parts against the ground until his hands became rough, eventually creating a 14-degree-of-freedom humanoid robot for only 200 yuan.
The following summer, he spent 300 yuan to build force-feedback gloves and a dexterous hand with 3D virtual reality interaction software, again using no electric tools. His academic path further reflected this unconventional route; although he met the overall score requirement for Zhejiang University's mechanical engineering postgraduate program, he failed the English exam and was transferred to Shanghai University, a detail netizens later joked contributed to the name 'Unitree,' implying poor performance in 'language and math' but strong skills elsewhere.

In 2015, he made this electric drive solution public, approximately one year before Boston Dynamics switched to electric drives. Also at the end of 2015, after reading an article about quadrupedal robots in IEEE Spectrum, he casually posted a link to his XDog video in the comments section on YouTube.
The video gained significant traction, leading to investor interest even after he graduated and interned at DJI. After working at DJI for two or three months, he resigned to pursue entrepreneurship, spending a stressful month in Shenzhen trying to secure financing with an initial team of only three or four people and no registered company. This period marked the transition from academic prototype to commercial venture, driven by the viral success of the XDog demonstration.
The first financial lifeline came from Yin Fangming, a former product manager and director at MediaTek, Sohu, and Qihoo 360, who co-founded an early-stage fund focused on smart hardware in 2014. In November 2016, Yin Fangming invested 2 million yuan as an individual, acquiring 15% of Unitree Robotics' shares based on a post-investment valuation of 13.33 million yuan. Wang Xingxing recalled this investment in an interview with 'Late Night,' noting that Yin Fangming approached him on his own and offered flexible terms, with the money transferred without even signing an agreement. This capital was critical for survival, but Yin Fangming's involvement evolved over time. In April 2018, he sold part of his shares to Shenzhen Anchuang Technology for 1.3105 million yuan. Two years later, in July 2019, Dexun Investment, founded by Tencent co-founder Zeng Liqing, acquired 4% of Unitree Robotics for 4 million yuan. The real surge in valuation and strategic positioning occurred in 2024, driven by state capital and mass market entry. On January 31, a financing round brought in approximately 600.34 million yuan, with Meituan's Hanhai Information, Jinshi Growth, Yuanmao Capital, Xinjiang Shenzhen Venture Capital, and Zhongwangtou all investing simultaneously. On August 31, another round brought in about 284.71 million yuan, with the Beijing Robot Industry Development Fund and Zhongguancun Science City joining the list. This marked the first time state-owned capital became direct shareholders of Unitree Robotics, giving the company a clearer label as an 'embodied intelligence industry asset.'
The entry of these funds signaled a shift in the industry's center of gravity from pure internet play to hard tech and national strategic assets. This financial backing coincided with a period of intense product development and market penetration, allowing Unitree to leverage its technological advantages in the emerging humanoid robot sector. The accumulation of capital from both private and state sources provided the necessary resources to compete globally and domestically, solidifying Unitree's position as a leader in the field.
Unitree's cultural breakthrough was cemented by its appearance in the eighth program of CCTV's Spring Festival Gala, directed by Zhang Yimou, titled 'Yang BOT.' Sixteen H1 robots, dressed in red padded jackets and holding red handkerchiefs, performed Yangge dances, changing formations and rotating their handkerchiefs from different angles. The related discussions generated a cumulative total of 3.2 billion views, making the robots famous across the country overnight.
Huang Jiawei from Unitree Robotics' marketing department explained that this was not luck, noting that they had performed on CCTV's Spring Festival Gala in the Year of the Ox in 2021 and maintained close contact with CCTV staff, who reached out three or four months in advance. The team underwent months of intensive rehearsals, debugging, and choreography. In September, Wang Xingxing was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential figures in the field of AI for 2025, recognizing his global impact. On November 15, Unitree Robotics completed the preparation for IPO listing, starting the clock for its public debut. This rapid ascent was supported by the company's rapid ascent.
