I’m building a life insurer because I believe there are good products. They just aren’t the products that are sold. The industry has an incentive problem. Agents sell life insurance and annuities. Agents want big commissions. Big commissions come from products with big margins. Big margins come at the expense of the user. Everyone wins but the person buying the product. People often don’t like their life insurance agent! They’re salespeople. They (often) come off as sleazy. So the cycle continues: agents sell bad products, people think life insurance is a bad product, rinse and repeat.

A few years before starting @meanwhile, a big VC firm came to me with an idea: build the payments platform for online gambling and gaming. It was around 2020. States were starting to legalize gambling and the timing was perfect. Honestly, it was a great business idea at the right moment in time. I gave it serious thought, then I said no. I couldn’t wake up every morning and have that be the thing I do with my life. I’m not saying it’s bad. I go to Vegas. It just wasn’t what I wanted to spend my life on. The relationship I want with my users is for them to be better of tomorrow than today. Better off in decades.
