Just came down from Mt Blanc, we were one of the last groups that went there via Gouter route, now its closed, most guides cancelled and huts are basically empty https://t.co/gBjIYZysKo Grand Couloir is a funnel like steep valley you gotta cross to go to the upper Gouter hut before climbing Mt Blanc. This funnel channels rocks falling from the top into a corridor of about 30 meters, you gotta cross. Some of the rocks are size of a fridge and they fall, spin and splinter into smaller ones randomly. The recent heatwaves are melting the ice caps and glaciers that used to hold the rocks together, so now they are falling more than before. Our guides sent one sentry to the top with a walkie talkie, with the idea we can get a headsup if he sees something move, it takes a rock about 35 seconds to fall, which is about the time you need to cross the gap. We got clear headsup from the sentry and crossed. Other group was about to go, when our sentry called that rocks are falling. We started shouting to the other group to fall back, and they did, 3 seconds before massive rockfall arrived. I never saw anything like this before. Our guides told us we are the only one with a lookout, everyone else just crosses early when the temperatures are still low and hopes for the best.
