That's the number that tells you the truth about your business.
Net new can hide a lot of sins. You can paper over a leaking bucket by selling harder at the top.
Churn doesn't lie like that. It tells you whether the accounts you already won are actually getting healthier or quietly drifting away.
Most of the time, high churn is an internal problem. Bad onboarding, bad product fit, a sales process that oversold something.
But sometimes it's not you at all. Sometimes churn is the first sign the market itself has shifted, or that you're in a market you should be exiting.
You won't see that shift by watching the top-line number. You'll see it in why accounts are leaving.
The real work isn't finding the next logo. It's building on top of the accounts you've already sold, expanding them every quarter.
Chasing new business to replace churned accounts is the expensive way to grow. Expanding the base you already have is the cheap way.
It is hell of a lot more comfortable to analyse your wins than to dwell on your loses but you really need the data to understand the health of your underlying business and where to go next.
