1. Auryn's background and how The Interfold formed
• Bitcoin rabbit hole in 2013, Ethereum since genesis (2016), founded the DAOHub forums
• Worked at @gnosis_ as PM for the Conditional Tokens Framework
• Spun up Gnosis Guild, which built Zodiac (non-custodial treasury management tooling) and now operate as a venture studio; Interfold is now their main focus
• Interfold idea came from repeatedly running into the same problems in public on-chain governance (bribery, collusion, and coercion)
• He worked hands-on with MACI (the minimal anti-collusion infrastructure @VitalikButerin talked about in 2019)
• Vitalik's role: reviewed the v1 whitepaper, gave early feedback and ongoing advice, invested 16 ETH in the CCA auction but no formal relationship, just "a community member"
• *The tech (ZK + FHE + MPC combo) only became feasible recently hence why nobody built this before
2. What The Interfold is
• One-liner: lets competing companies or complete strangers compute together on sensitive data - private inputs, verifiable outputs, no trusted hardware
• Technically it's a blockchain co-processor: you call an on-chain entry point to request a compute environment → selects a committee of node operators → they run a verifiable distributed key generation (DKG) ceremony and publish a key → parties encrypt inputs to that key, committed on-chain → a verifiable FHE compute job runs → ciphertext output published on-chain → committee coordinates to decrypt and publish the plaintext result
• They call these packaged environments "E3s" (encrypted execution environments) which has no hardware trust assumptions unlike TEEs
3. Core use cases
• Target systems whose integrity depends on keeping secrets. Secret ballot voting (defends against bribery/collusion/coercion) and sealed-bid auctions (prevents strategy leakage)
• More economically efficient auctions = better outcomes for bidders, sellers, and the marketplace (basically the same reason tradfi uses sealed bids and dark pools)
• Access/liability problems (e.g. medical research). Researchers can run regressions on encrypted inputs from multiple institutions and get only the aggregate output, never taking custody of plaintext data (avoid liability of hosting sensitive data)
4. $FOLD value accrual and tokenomics
• $FOLD is the economic security layer. Node operators must stake $FOLD (+ stablecoin bond) to be eligible for committee selection
• Capital is always at risk if they misbehave (slashing backstop)
• Fees: requesters pay proportional to committee size and duration needed; the committee earns the bulk of the fee, remainder goes to the foundation treasury
• Token unlocks: pre-seed, seed, @legiondotcc investors, and @Uniswap CCA auction allocations are all fully unlocked already
• Team tokens have a 24 month linear unlock starting Sep 1. Gnosis Guild and the Interfold Foundation have a 48 month linear starting Sep 1
5. What's next, demand sources, long-term vision
• Immediate: dogfooding. The Interfold DAO will be the first user, running the first E3s end-to-end through its own governance
• Parallel crypto work: circuits to improve DKG efficiency, multiple decryption rounds per compute job, and more multiplicative depth in the FHE scheme
• Demand pipeline: @AragonProject partnership since they have a pipeline of orgs wanting the private voting implementation, which they'll tap once the DAO use case is proven
• Then auction distribution (token launchpads doing sealed-bid fair launches, eventually solver/block-building auctions once latency improves)
• In 1 year, Interfold wants to be the standard for private voting plus auctions , and first off-chain/real-world pilots. And in 5 years they aim to have a a thriving developer ecosystem building things they can't foresee
• North Star throughout: nation-state scale. Design decisions were explicitly stress-tested against "could this run US election-scale receipt-free secret ballots" and "could this enable US-China-Russia data collaboration" - i.e. real-world impact
